Buying Priority

By general statute of the state of North Carolina, University departments, government agencies and non-profit organizations have priority when acquiring surplus property.  The dates and times for viewing and purchasing for:

All sales are final with no refunds, no exchanges and no returns.


Sales to NC State University Departments

The NC State Surplus Store is open to the university department authorized buyers every Monday through and Wednesday. University departments are strongly encouraged to browse the Surplus Property inventory first, before purchasing new, more expensive supplies and equipment.   • Days: Monday through Friday
  • Hours: 7:30 AM –  11:30AM and 12:30PM – 4:00PM (except the preview Thursday before the public sale)
  • Location: 3240 Ligon Street, MMD Warehouse, building 161 on the campus map

University Departments’ Surplus Sale Guidelines

  • All items are on a first-come, first-served basis and are sold as-is.
  • Items are not reserved for purchase.
  • Prices are non-negotiable and may not be changed during the course of the sale.

Authorized Buyers

  • All asset management coordinators and MarketPlace shoppers are authorized to purchase surplus items.
  • To become an authorized buyer, see your department SAR administrator.
  • Your unity I.D. and a valid project number are required to purchase surplus.
  • All surplus property purchases are processed through the financial system and visible in the Wolfpack Reporting System.

Departmental Delivery

  • If needed, departments, may arrange for delivery. A delivery fee will be determined by size and complexity of the delivery.

Buying from Federal Surplus

  • Browse the catalog of items available from Federal Surplus Property here.
  • Gain authorization from your Department Head:
  • Email the completed form to the NC State Surplus Office, surplus@ncsu.edu
  • Questions? Contact the Surplus Property Receiving Coordinator at 919-515-5525
  • Present the signed form along with your campus ID at the Federal Surplus warehouse
  • Federal Surplus warehouse accepts CASH ONLY for payment.

Sales to Government and Non-Profit Agencies

NC State surplus items are available for purchase by State and Federal Government agencies, nonprofits, K – 12 Schools and other universities, before they are offered to the general public.

  • Days: Monday through Friday
  • Hours: 7:30 AM –  11:30AM and 12:30PM – 4:00PM (except the preview Thursday before the public sale)
  • Location: 3240 Ligon Street, MMD Warehouse, building 161 on the campus map

Government & Non-Profit Agencies’ Surplus Sale Guidelines

  • All items are on a first-come, first-served basis and are sold as-is.
  • Items are not reserved for purchase.

Approved Organizations

  • An organization’s approval must be obtained through the NC Department of Administration.
  • A copy of the approval letter is required to make a purchase.
  • All buyers listed in the approval letter are eligible to make purchases on behalf of the agency.
  • Any organization seeking approval for 501(c)(3) status must complete & submit a Qualification Request.

Merchandise Pick-Up

  • Non-profit agencies have one week from date of purchase to pick-up purchased items.
  • Pick-Up Hours: 7:30AM – 11:30AM and 12:30PM – 4:00PM, Monday through Friday

Public Surplus Sales

The NC State Surplus Store is open to the public on the 2nd and 4th Friday January through October, and the 2nd Friday of November and December. For more detailed information, please read our Public Surplus Sales Guide.

  • Sale hours: 8:00AM – 11:00AM.
  • Preview hours: 7:30AM – 11:30AM, Thursday before the sale.
  • Location: 3240 Ligon Street, Raleigh, NC 27695 (campus map).

Public Surplus Sale Guidelines

  • All items are on a first-come, first-served basis and are sold as-is.
  • Items are not reserved for public purchase.
  • Payment methods: Cash or Visa/MasterCard. NO CHECKS.

After You Purchase

  • Purchased items must be removed from the warehouse at the time of sale or picked up by the end of following business day.
  • If you are not taking the sold items with you please put a sold tag on them which are available at the Sales Counters.

Merchandise Pick-Up Hours

  •  If items are not removed immediately, you may return that same day and pick-up your items from 12:30PM – 4:00PM.
  • If you are picking up items the following business day, pick-up hours are 7:30AM – 11:30AM and 12:30PM – 4:00PM.
